40th Resurrection

[Mail call! Theo's at the mail box on his way home when he notices there's been a delivery. Inside is a small envelope with his name on it. Great, more bullshit from home, he thinks. Whatever it is, is small and most likely metal.

He takes it inside and opens it at the kitchen. Out of it falls a small .38 caliber bullet which clatters to the table. Looking at it closely, it's smeared with blood. Theo stares at it blankly. He immediately knows what it is.]

You sick sons of bitches...

[Family members are free to come across this scene.

Later, Theo can be found walking around town, glad the weather is finally warming up. He's looking rather sullen, but accompanying are his two crow familiars. One flies ahead, or slowly around him, and the other sits on his shoulder. He's also talking aloud to them, and they chatter back.]

No, I really can't explain it. I missed a lot of it. There was a highway, and then a robot, and... no, you're not going out to the highway. There's nothing there.

Except maybe bears.

[Approach/accost/etc?]

[He's not coming back. He doesn't know where he's going, but he's marching off, seething. He regrets every last word that just came out to Nina. It was like it happened on its own, without any control over it. And he knew, he *knew*, that just like Kay, that was it with Nina. After Kay read that paper, she avoided him completely. He didn't blame either of them. Not for a moment.

He tries to light a cigarette as he goes, but his hands are shaking too much for him to light the match. He tosses them aside and opts for his flask instead.

He keeps walking.]

[He does stop, but only turns it head to yell back.]

What!

[He had nothing else to say, and can't imagine what she could have left to say to him at this point.]

[He snaps his elbow from her grip.]

I don't-- No! I'm...

[Of course, he has no idea where he's going. He just can't deal with this right now. Not that he ever really can.]

[He just glares at her for a moment, then marches in the direction of the house with one more swig of the flask. Though, if she doesn't stop him, he's going to lock himself back into the study.]

[He's still faintly shaking when she grabs him, but he pulls his arm away instinctively again.

He stars back at her, waiting to hear what she has to say.]

[He manages to stare back at her as she speaks; it's level, but he's still breathing deeply to keep himself calm.

When he finally manages to answer, it's quiet, but he doesn't break eye contact.]

I don't deserve anyone's forgiveness.

Why does someone like me deserve it for that! Or your brother, or anyone like us! How could you possibly forgive that?

Some of us are just monumentally fucked up, or have fucked up beyond redemption. I'm dead, I got what was coming to me! That's the only redemption I deserve.

I would have been executed later. In the end it's the same.

[At this point, Theo is starting to sound exhausted.]

I can't see Mayfield as a second chance. Mayfield is a punishment.

[In the meanwhile, Theo had taken his flask back out, taking a long pull from it this time before setting it down on the table, empty.

After a moment, he looks at her.]

What do you see Mayfield as, then? Why do you think you're here?

And what did he think? Or did you not talk to him about it yet.

Hnn. Nothing good comes out of this place. We have our freedoms stripped, our lives taken away, threats always looming over us. How can there be anything good that comes out of it?

[That answer surprises him.]

...

I figured you'd consider that a black mark against Mayfield.
