[It's this simple, Mayfield: Theo Crawford comes home to find a black and white cat asleep on his bed. This is not his cat. It does not belong to anyone in town. But he recognizes it immediately.]

Aristophanes?!

[The cat rouses, seemingly happy to see the familiar face, and walks over to Theo demanding attention. Any members of the household or visitors who investigated the exclamation will find Theo staring dumbfounded at large tuxedo cat.]

[He hasn't forgotten the girl who murdered him during Mayfield's last event, either. Revenge will come, but Theo has learned some patience since he's come to live here. Every day in Mayfield was the same. He was irked about be snuck up on, but felt better when he found out the prizes for the battle royale were pretty lame. His paranoia will be in overdrive, though. Anyone out today who is within a block or two of Theo, and can sense magic, will be able to detect strong protective spells radiating from him.

He's sitting on a park bench, reading a spell book while making notes in another. One of his crows sits on his shoulder, gently chattering at its master. The other is teasing the tomcat, squawking and dancing around it, but the cat doesn't really seem to care.]

Deimos, would you leave him alone already? If he claws you, don't come crying to me.

[The cat looks at Theo, who returns a flat look.] That's not an invitation, so don't get any ideas.

Even if a place like Mayfield thinks that's all women are good for, girls still go to school.

I suppose in my world women have even less of a social standing.

Hnn. Unless you want to learn magic, I'm not going to be a teacher. And even then I'd have to think about it.

My, that's quite a shame. It seems like you're good at this writing thing...

You have to be, to do magic. You have to be able to read spells to do them. You can memorize them, but most are too complicated. Writing your own spells takes a lot of work, too.

Ah, you're a magician? Hm, I wonder if you could show me some magic sometime?

I could show you, I suppose. I focus in gravity and necromancy.

What do you want to see? Necromancy is difficult here, but gravity spells aren't too difficult.

The latter sounds more convenient.

Hnn. Alright. [He likes being a showoff. Without needing his books or components, Theo has worked out a nifty little spell. All he does is mutter a few key words in Latin, and he points his finger at a nearby tree as if he were pointing a gun. He ends the spell by saying "Bang!". There's no sound of a gun going off, but there is a nice little hole in that tree, as if a gun had shot it.]

That's a new one I came up with.

*Nanami walks up to the tree and inspects it.*

That was rather impressive... what language was that? I have never heard anything like it before.

*Of course, it doesn't matter, Nanami already understands that the incantation is associated with the manipulation of gravity and she has already memorized the words even though they are complete nonsense to her. Very cleaver, really.*

Latin. Usually that or ancient Greek are the basis of spells. Most of them go back to their times, and most spellcasters are sticklers for tradition. I don't really care either way.

Oh, I've never heard of either of those.

You must be a completely different world from me, then. Those languages are over 2,000 year old.

Surely there are different alternatives? Perhaps I come from a time before even that. Or maybe the fact that I am uneducated has to do with my ignorance.

Could be. But coming from different worlds is common in this town. Most people do.

How do you know that for sure?

Have you talked to some of these people? It's pretty clear, if you ask me.

If you have no proof then this conversation is pointless.

I've talked to people who have abilities that don't exist in my world. Or races that don't. How is that not proof?

So you just believed them without doubting their words at all?

I suppose I won't ever know for sure. And yeah, they could be lying. But in the end it doesn't fucking matter anyway.
